Glencoe Turf Ribbon-Cutting

2017 bond passage and Hops donation of $300,000 funded the nearly 140,000 square-foot field

October 22, 2018, Hillsboro, OR -
Glencoe High School students and staff, District staff, Board and community members, and representatives from the Hillsboro Hops minor league baseball organization were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of Glencoe’s new lighted turf field on Monday, Oct. 15.

Made possible by the passage of the District’s 2017 Bond and a generous donation of $300,000 from the Hillsboro Hops Community Fund, Glencoe’s lighted turf field will be home to junior varsity and varsity softball games, youth baseball and softball games, and lacrosse matches; and it will provide a practice area for football, soccer, band, dance team, and other athletic and activity groups, in addition to being a valuable resource for the broader Glencoe community.

Several speakers addressed the crowd, including Principal Claudia Ruf, Board member Kim Strelchun, and students Ben Richards, ASB President; Pierce Flynn, Marching Tide; Zach Cox, football; and Morgan DeBord, softball.

“The Glencoe High School turf is a dream-come-true,” expressed Ruf, “a dream made possible by the passage of the 2017 bond and the Hops’ $300,000 donation.”

Richards added: “This is much more than a field--it’s a gathering place that will strengthen our student body and our community.”
For the cutting of the ribbon, guest speakers were joined by Superintendent Mike Scott; Mike and Laura McMurray, owners of the Hillsboro Hops; other members of Glencoe’s student government; Hops mascot Barley; and Glencoe mascot Captain Crimson.

The lighted turf field is part of more than $31 million in planned investments at Glencoe, including an expansion of the school and of career-technical education infrastructure that will begin in 2019 and conclude in 2020. The school will also receive new furnishings and safety enhancements.
